Pepijn van Neerijnen specialises in how organizations and organizational ecosystems adapt, evolve, and grow — and what it takes to become a driving force of change rather than a follower of it. His work sits at the intersection of strategy, economic development, and organizational behaviour, making him a sought-after advisor for those looking to strengthen the competitive fabric of firms, sectors, or entire regional economies.
As Associate Partner at Economisch Bureau Amsterdam, Pepijn brings academic depth and practical sharpness to complex strategic questions. He has advised organizations on how to build the internal capabilities — from knowledge management and information processing to executive decision-making and competitive intelligence — that underpin sustained growth and resilience. His expertise in business ecosystems is particularly valuable for clients working to attract investment, stimulate high-growth entrepreneurship, or design the conditions under which firms and sectors can thrive collectively.
Alongside his consulting work, Pepijn holds a position as Assistant Professor in Strategy at the Amsterdam Business School, University of Amsterdam, where he conducts applied research in partnership with public and private organizations. His current projects include identifying the structural and strategic determinants of high-growth firms, examining how top management team cognition shapes strategic direction, and developing machine learning tools for competitor analysis. He also studies the tensions that emerge when organizations outsource high-reliability activities — a question of growing relevance in an era of deepening specialisation and ecosystem interdependence.
A recurring theme across his work is the management of fundamental organizational tensions: between exploration and exploitation, short-term efficiency and long-term adaptability, firm-level strategy and ecosystem-level dynamics. These are precisely the tensions that determine whether a firm — or an economy — stagnates or compounds its advantage over time.
Pepijn has taught strategy, organizational renewal, entrepreneurship, and strategy consulting to executive and full-time master’s students across a wide range of programmes.
He holds a PhD in Strategy from Erasmus University.
