The Netherlands wants to be completely climate neutral by 2050 . To achieve that, more sustainable energy generation is indispensable. But where exactly are the opportunities? Economisch Bureau Amsterdam launches ZonInzicht: an online tool that shows the potential for solar energy for every municipality in the Netherlands and compares it with the current state of affairs.
ZonInzicht shows how much solar energy is already being generated, how much additional capacity is possible and where untapped potential lies on large roofs, infrastructure, field sites, water and homes.
Insight into potential
ZonInzicht was developed for policy makers, interest groups and other interested parties who want quick and clear insight into the performance and potential of municipalities in the field of solar energy. ZonInzicht is freely accessible.
The tool shows , among other things:
- Current solar electricity generation, including growth from the previous year
- The ratio of generation to consumption by municipality
- The spatial potential for solar energy, broken down by type of location
- A ranking of municipalities that grew the most or least in solar power generation compared to the previous year
Data analysis as basis
ZonInzicht is based on public data from CBS and TKI Urban Energy. Figures on housing stock, electricity consumption, land use and solar electricity production were used. On the basis of these data, the theoretical amount of space available for solar power, how much of it is currently being used and how that compares to local energy consumption was calculated for each municipality.
