In Curaçao, poverty and income inequality have increased between 2011 and 2023 and social assistance and general old-age benefits are below the poverty line. Due to the increase in income inequality, Curaçao is now one of the most unequal countries in the region.
This development contrasts with the economic situation in Curaçao, says Martijn Mak (Economic Bureau Amsterdam) on the news platform Dossier Koninkrijksrelaties. Tourism income is increasing and GDP is picking up. In 2023, Curaçao received a quarter more overnight tourists than before the corona crisis. More can therefore be done to ensure that tourism income also reaches low-income groups.
