Bonaire is struggling with a housing shortage, particularly in social housing. This seems to be exacerbated by economic and demographic developments: more and more tourists are coming to Bonaire and the group of migrants from wealthy countries is also growing. This is concluded in an analysis that Amsterdam Bureau for Economics (EBA) conducted for a round table discussion of the House of Representatives’ standing committee for housing and spatial planning. Although various measures are being taken to solve the problems on the housing market, according to EBA, a broader vision for the economic development of the island is lacking. Tourism and the growing group of migrants from wealthy countries place demands on the housing stock. At the same time, the GDP per capita on Bonaire did not increase between 2012 and 2022.
